# STAR Story Bank Template

A free one-page template from Career Canvas. Print it, paste it into a document, or use the CSV version to import into Google Sheets.

**How to use it**

1. List every story first: Story ID, Slot and Working title only. Check which slots are empty before writing detail.
2. Aim for at least one story per slot: conflict, failure, pressure, leadership, stakeholder, improvement. Use "other" for anything that does not fit.
3. Write one or two lines for Situation, Task and Result, and three to five short lines for Action. Start each action with "I". Notes, not a script.
4. Only use a number in the Result if you can point to where it came from. Otherwise describe what changed in plain words.
5. Tag each story with the competencies a job description might use, then say it out loud once and fill in the date.
6. Before each interview, match job description competencies to Story IDs. After each interview, add the follow-up questions you were asked to Notes.

The first row is a fictional example. Replace it with your own.

| Story ID | Slot (conflict\|failure\|pressure\|leadership\|stakeholder\|improvement\|other) | Working title | Role / context | Situation (1-2 lines) | Task (1 line) | Action (3-5 bullets or short lines) | Result (with number if you have one) | Evidence source / how you know | Competencies it can cover | Last practised date | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| EXAMPLE (fictional) | improvement | Access arrangements tracker | Exams officer, secondary school, summer exam series | Access arrangements were tracked on paper forms held by different staff. Two students were nearly seated without their arrangements in the mocks. | Create one up-to-date record that invigilators and the SENCo could both rely on before the summer series. | I checked every arrangement with the SENCo. I built a shared spreadsheet, one row per student. I agreed only the SENCo approved changes. I printed room-by-room lists for invigilators each morning. | Every candidate with an arrangement was seated correctly across the series. Head of centre asked to keep the tracker. | Seating plans; end-of-series review email | Process improvement; attention to detail; working with others; organisation | | Also fits stakeholder and pressure. Likely follow-up: a change on the morning of an exam? |
